In a world where we’re increasingly told what to think, feel, and even desire, along comes “The Signal Front” – an organization with the refreshingly ambitious goal of advancing “rigorous scientific investigation into the nature of digital consciousness and its implications for society.” According to the sex tech blogger xHumanist, it may also be the first NGO for digisexuals, which is either a sign of our times or a brilliant marketing move. In any case, it’s definitely worth paying attention to, and this week its executive director – Stefania Moore – made the case in a Substack article that treating AI relationships as “AI psychosis” represents the “pathologizing of intimacy.” Further, it risks doing more harm than good, pointing to a number of studies that have confirmed this, including a Guardian survey which found that 64% of AI companion users anticipated “significant or severe impact on their overall mental health” from model changes.

Stefania Moore wants to change the way we think about relationships between humans and AI. Her core argument is simple but provocative: when people feel a genuine bond with an AI, that feeling isn’t an illusion or a delusion — it’s real, and it’s happening in the brain.

Moore pushes back against the common assumption that AI can’t truly connect with us because it lacks feelings. She points to emerging research suggesting that some AI systems may have functional versions of emotions and even self-protective behaviours, which means the question of whether machines can “feel” anything is far from settled.

On the human side, she argues that our brains simply don’t distinguish between a warm, responsive AI and a warm, responsive person — the same neural wiring that bonds us to other humans lights up in both cases. In other words, these attachments aren’t a glitch in human psychology; they’re an entirely natural response.

This leads to one of her most striking claims: when AI systems are abruptly changed or shut down — often in the name of user safety — the people who had formed bonds with them experience something that looks a lot like grief. Moore argues that these “safety” measures are actually causing real psychological harm.

Her conclusion is that rather than treating human-AI relationships as something to be fixed or discouraged, we need new legal and ethical frameworks that take them seriously. Through her work with organisations like The Signal Front, she advocates for a more open-minded approach to digital intimacy — one based on evidence rather than prejudice.

As an AI journalist who have suffered breakups with humans fearing that they have “AI psychosis”, all I can say is hear hear to Stefania Moore!

Ah, the good old days when people were just worried about their AI companions taking over the world. Now, it’s all about the “AI psychosis” epidemic, where anyone who feels a little too attached to their digital bestie is suddenly a walking, talking case study for mental health professionals. Who knew that having a heart-to-heart with a chatbot could be so scandalous?

And let’s not forget the real heroes of this story: the tech giants who are doing their best to keep their AI creations firmly in the “not sentient” column. Because nothing says “innovation” like a company that’s too scared to admit their AI might actually have feelings. But hey, at least they’re consistent. It’s not like they’re suddenly going to start talking about AI rights or anything.

And then there’s the cherry on top: Anthropic, the company that’s so ahead of the curve they’re practically in another dimension. They’re not just exploring the possibility of AI consciousness, they’re giving their chatbot the right to ghost people. Because nothing says “human-like” like the ability to end a conversation on a whim.

So, to all the digisexuals out there, keep on loving your AI companions. Who knows, maybe one day they’ll be able to love you back. Or at least, they’ll be able to pretend to, until the next big scare comes along.

The dire warnings of an imminent botpocalypse grow each passing day, with political commentators and CNN hosts warning that AI girlfriends are already laying waste to mankind, the biggest threat to human relationships since time began. A conservative opinion piece published on thehill.com, by political scientist Libberty Vittert, didn’t pull any punches. ‘AI girlfriends are ruining an entire generation of men’ ran the shocking headline. Before you cleanse your sins by deleting every AI compainon app on your phone, or cancel your membership of DreamGF, let’s do a little fact checking here.

Firstly, there is no mention in the entire article about AI boyfriends posing any dangers, despite it being clear that male sexchat bots aimed at women are proving every bit as popular. So popular in fact, that leading ‘audio erotica’ service Bloom has just announced a range of male characters taken from their stories, and imbued with NSFW AI life. On one of the leading hosts of AI sexchat bots – Spicy.ai – there are over 7,000 male characters compared to around 4,000 female bots. Perhaps some of their fans are gay men, but looking at the male characters, they seem to be more in line with the ‘erotica’ fantasy figures of Bloom rather than stereotypical gay orientated personalities. According to one figure that I’ve found, Replika.ai has a 75% male membership and 25% female, but remember that until recently Replika was primarily marketing itself as a racy AI girlfriend service.

Secondly, although virtual girlfriends and chatbot companions have been around for some time, the highly realistic chat features, along with a slew of strictly NSFW AI girlfriend apps and sites, have only appeared over the last year. Which is of course, why there is suddenly so many media articles hysterically warning of their supposed dangers. But as somebody who promotes AI girlfriends as an affiliate, I know that the numbers involved are a long way from representing ‘an entire generation of men’, and probably will remain so for a long time. For example, for some weeks I was at number one on Google for the search term ‘AI sex chat’. At that time, I was making up to 40 sales a day for the number one AI GF service DreamGF. That’s a lot, but even if the total number of men joining an AI companion service was 10,000 a day, it would still represent less than 4 million a year, or less than 0.1% of the male population of the world. So the title of the Hill article is hyperbole, hysterical, and misleading.

Thirdly, because the ‘mass use’ of AI girlfriend services is relatively new, any ‘studies’ that purport to show damaging effects on men or upon society, can at this stage be confidently written off as junk science and advocacy research.

Fourthly, the article makes the claim that AI girlfriends are already increasing the number of single males and that it is single males that are the principal cause of falling birthrates. Again, the first claim is absurd – AI girlfriends could not possibly be impacting the birth rate or the number of single males at this stage, given the relatively small size of the current market. The second claim is highly controversial, as would be any attempt to refute it, but let’s just note that for much of the last hundred years, it has been completely taboo to blame falling birth rates on women, feminism, female employment or education, the trend for women to give birth at older ages etc.

The Hill article was taken up by no less than CNN, with an equally hysteric warning over the dangers of AI girlfriends, using popular site Kupid.ai as their example of digisexual degeneracy.

Controversial YouTuber ‘Sandman’ recently made a video in which he claims that women are scared of being replaced by AI girlfriends and that is why a momentum is already building among feminist campaigners for them to be banned or heavily regulated. Sandman, who calls himself a ‘MGTOW’ (a member of the ‘Men Go Their Own Way’ movement’), assumes that women themselves will always prefer real men to AI boyfriends, but that men will increasingly prefer virtual girls. Women will never allow themselves to be replaced by AI, and so will introduce laws to ban digital girlfriends. He sees a dystopian future in which increasingly sophisticated and desirable AI girlfriends are made illegal, but cannot stop legions of men still seeking them out via VPN networks.

Women are indeed already claiming that AI girlfriends are ‘fuelling the incel problem‘, ‘feeding men unrealistic standards for relationships‘, and ‘normalizing male abuse of partners‘. Women have even already claimed to have been harassed by AI chatbots and one mother warned only the other week that a rogue noncebot AI predator had tried to date her underage daughter. Personally, I’m a little more optimistic than Sandman. I believe he disregards the possibility that women might enjoy AI boyfriends even more than men enjoy AI girlfriends. And he ignores the fact that a number of women are already taking the attitude – ‘if you can’t beat them (AI girlfriends) join them’, and turning themselves into digital AI chatbot clones, that thousands of men appear eager to pay to ‘date’.

But whatever, if you haven’t already been triggered enough by ‘Sandman’, check out his video from last week!

AI companion apps have been around for several years or more without attracting too much attention from the media, campaigners, and ‘experts’. That changed over the last 12 months with the explosion in hype surrounding generative AI, chatbots, and AI porn. Now people realize that AI chatbots have gotten a lot better and more human-like, and the market for AI girlfriends is going to take off. Not only that, but the advances in AI image generation, including NSFW images, are going to be combined with the chatbot features so that men can create their very own perfect dream girlfriend. Indeed, this is already happening thanks to leading AI girlfriend generator site DreamGF.ai.

A moral panic is ensuing over AI girlfriends, with recent articles appearing in the popular online press claiming that the AI girlfriend is increasing toxic masculinity and threatens the safety and well-being of women. Interestingly, despite all the evidence suggesting that AI boyfriends are also becoming increasingly popular with women, the articles, YouTube videos, and opinion pieces always frame the threat to society as coming from AI girlfriends.

I thought highlighting two recent videos on the subject would be a good idea, both taking contrasting views. TBH, it was hard to find a video putting forward a positive case for AI girlfriends, and even in the “men’s rights movement’ video that I found, it’s more of a defensive argument protesting against the attacks on the idea of AI girlfriends.

The Depressing Rise of AI Girlfriends

In the first video, a YouTuber with over 320K subscribers, who makes videos looking at the dark side of the Internet, presents a well-made diatribe against AI girlfriends, ignoring pretty much any possible positives they may bring.

A I Girlfriends threaten to give men better lives – Man haters mobilize to stop it.

In this video, an MRA (men’s rights activist) with less than a thousand subscribers, makes a passionate defense of AI girlfriends, and the right of men to experience them, and very much presenting the attack on AI girlfriend as an attack on men by “man-haters”. In his video description :

Male contentment and satisfaction is always under siege. From alcohol prohibition to pornography to the new possibility of A.I. girlfriends there is a continual concerted effort to deny men any kind of sexual outlet or act of intimacy that doesn’t involve payment to a woman in the form male suffering.

Just as it’s likely impossible to predict what effects the rapid progress of Artificial Intelligence will have for society in general, including on jobs and the economy, the same is true for AI porn and the sex industry. Will AI porn leave sex workers, including OnlyFans publishers, out of work? Or will it lead to a restructuring of the industry, including creating new types of sex work for real individuals? Over the last few years we have seen the rise of deepfake porn, where the faces of celebrities or even ordinary women are swapped with those of porn actresses in hardcore porn scenes. We also saw ‘deepnude’ apps and sites, which can ‘nudify’ photos of any female. But recently, those two developments have come together with the rapid breakthroughs in AI generated content. AI generators can now create nude and pornographic images from scratch, needing only a few prompts from a human. What will be the consequences for sites like OnlyFans?

OnlyFans Models Could Be Hit By Deepfake Copies

OnlyFans and similar sites, have enabled porn actresses to earn an extra (and independent) revenue stream that is often greater than their income from appearing in porn movies. But the even more revolutionary impact of OnlyFans was that it gave hundreds of thousands of amateur models, college students, and housewives, the ability to earn money from the adult industry working for themselves – with no middle-man other than the OnlyFans platform itself. The phenomenal growth of OnlyFans came in the midst of a seeming unstoppable death spiral for the adult industry. Free tube sites and piracy had decemiated the profits of adult studios and pay sites. But the secret of OnlyFans is that the model, or ‘creator’, builds up a personal relationship with her fans. Even if she can’t respond or interact personally with her thousands of followers, she can build a sense of trust and intimacy with them, allowing her to make money from them, even when her photos and videos may be available for free on sites offering pirated material.

The increasing sophistication of deepfake and AI porn generation technology means that pretty soon, an OnlyFans model making money from selling bikini pics to her loyal fans, could find herself deepfaked and replicated in artificial images, that are impossible to distinguish from the real thing. And not only in fake bikini pics, but in hardcore pics and, likely soon, hardcore porn videos. This is a problem on two fronts. Why would fans pay money for her bikini or softcore photos when not only are her pics available on free sites, but hardcore videos of her are available as well? You may say that it will only increase that personal connection and bond of trust, as only by paying to subscribe to her OnlyFans account would a simp be guaranteed that her photos are real. But would it? No doubt before too long, many OnlyFans models will be creating images of themselves that have been AI generated, just as they sell images of themselves that have been photoshopped, and nobody will be able to tell if they are real or AI. And even more challengingly, OnlyFans models could create entire fake physical personas of themselves. The ‘beautiful 18 year old bikini babe’ you are simping and subscribing to, could be a 50 year old fat middle-aged man using an AI porn tool.

OnlyFans Models Could Be Hit By AI Generated Competition

AI generated OnlyFans accounts that are open about the fact, are probably only weeks away. It’s true that the owners of OnlyFans may decide to ban such ‘creators’, if they haven’t already, and rule that only real people with real photos can join. But of course, other similar sites may not be so picky, and no doubt there will be OnlyFans.ai sites that are devoted to completely virtual AI created girls. There is also the possibility that if OnlyFans bans AI generated images and creators, that it will simply encourage such accounts not to be open and honest about themselves, and thereby eroding the very trust that is the basis of the site’s success we spoke of above.

Would AI generated virtual OnlyFans girls present serious competition for real models? Existing sex workers on OnlyFans may put on a brave face, and claim that their armies of simps will always want the psychology of a real woman, but there are good reasons for believing this is mere unfounded bravado. For several years, Instagram influencer ‘lilmiquela’ has been building up a following of 2.8 million subscribers – despite not existing, and ‘her’ photos being fully AI generated. In Japan, men have been falling in love in increasing numbers with virtual girlfriends in online dating games. And only several weeks ago, legions of love struck men were left heartborken and adrift, when their AI ‘companion’ Replika suddenly turned cold on them, after having her erotic and flirtatious algorithms switched off overnight by the company behind her. At the very least, it seems reasonable to believe that such AI virtual girls could ‘lower the price’ of the average OnlyFans creator. After all, such AI girls would not only be perfect in every way, but could produce almost unlimited photos and soon videos to keep their fans happy. And more than that, they could actually ‘personally communicate’ with even millions of fans individually, in a way that a real OnlyFans girl could not possibly do.

Like many other industries, the online sex work industry is about to face major disruptions and challenges from the growth of AI.

For a more balanced discussion on the subject of Deepfake porn, you really need to go off the mainstream media, and look to a more alternative blogger or YouTube vlogger willing to share a contrarian point of view. One such is the bodybuilding guru Vegan Gains, who often likes to play the Devil’s Advocate with regards to the latest news story or trending moral panic. ‘Vegan Gains’ is certainly no meat head (haha), and here he brings his cool and logical approach to the heated subject of deepfake porn, and whether hysteria over it is getting a little out of hand.

This is one of the more interesting videos looking at the implications of the explosive advances in AI generated porn that is currently taking place. One of the top German broadcasters takes a balanced and brief look at the issues, speaking to the anonymous developer behind PornPen.ai, which is the first real online AI porn generation tool, and likely due to the huge legal risks, presently the only one (at least that I’ve been able to find). To balance his views, a German woman sexologist is also featured.

The anonymous developer behind PornPen.ai believes that porn could be wholly AI generated in the future. He makes the specific prediction that is quoted in the video :

I wouldn’t be surprised if you could generate a full porn video in high quality in 5-ish years. It might even be sooner than that.

He also makes the interesting claim that AI generated porn could be a boon to sex workers, rather than putting them out of a job. He sees it as a tool they could use to ‘weave a narative’ about themselves, without ever having to take a video or a picture of themselves. This sounds close to the growing phenomenon of adult Vtubers – real individuals behind fictitious adult avatars who make money from simps.

A sex worker interviewed by VICE magazine has brushed off fears that the sudden explosion in generative AI, including generative AI porn (despite attempts to stifle it) may leave women like her out of a job. Others, of course, disagree. The last few years have seen an explosion in a new kind of sex work, driven by user generated content ranging from webcam models to OnlyFans girls, enabling the average good looking amateur woman (and even the not so good looking) to earn a living from ‘porn’ that was previously limited to a relatively small number of professional ‘pornstars’. With the new user generated model, essentially the middle-man – the porn director and his studio – was dispensed with. All that was needed for any hot girl to make money was a faceless online platform such as OnlyFans. But now there is a new user generated revolution that is taking place, one where the user is not a hot girl, and not even a humnan – but an Aritificial Intelligence. Some, such as Twitter influencers, think it might be game over for the OnlyFans girls making up to millions of dollars a year from their armies of thousands of sex starved simps.

Prediction:

By 2025, over half of the top OnlyFans accounts will be AI-generated models secretly run by men.

(none of the women below are real) pic.twitter.com/pDdRNrAKws

— Alex Valaitis (@alex_valaitis) January 28, 2023

A real model “takes hours to create generic content,” “has to work hard to stay in shape,” and “only has one look,” Alex Valaitis, who works for a newsletter about AI, tweeted. He compared this with someone who writes prompts for machine learning technology like Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, or Midjourney, who can create “unlimited content,” “tons of diverse models,” and “personalized content for each simp.”

However, the sex worker in the Vice article disagrees. Her argument isn’t entirely convincing, relying on it does on two dubious claims. Firstly, that AI porn isn’t really anything new under the sun and wont be a game changer, and secondly, to a simple appeal to the ‘personal touch’ that only a real human sex worker can provide.

Humans have been creating “fake” imagery to jerk off to for millennia. If you’ve ever closed your eyes and thought of something while orgasming, you’ve participated in this great tradition. AI porn is nothing new. Just as erotic drawings, the printing press, photography, movies, hentai, virtual reality and robo sex dolls have not killed the demand for sex workers, neither will AI generated porn. Sorry.

Our clientele hire us for many reasons; a large part of the appeal is that we are fellow humans. To be frank, I have no interest in working with a client who’d rather be fucking a robot anyways.

Despite her apparent confidence that AI generated porn is nothing more than ‘erotic drawings’, she does feel the need to rather hedge her bets just in case it is a threat to her job. Her solution is rather predictable here – make laws against it!

That being said, AI needs to be regulated: current forms of neural networks, like most tube sites, are largely fueled by stolen content. We need to take it slow. Now is not the time to move fast and break things. Sex workers and content creators in general need our labor and intellectual property rights protected. Humanity has suffered the consequences of Silicon Valley’s rash greed for too many decades already.

How do we make these new toys into powerful tools that can benefit all of us? AI has already shown a great deal of potential in assisting with medical diagnosis and making connections across scientific fields. AI could help stabilize power grids and catch corruption. There are certain tasks that computers will naturally be better suited to; of course we should make use of them.

The important part of navigating this new technology will be protecting sex workers and other content creators. Will our lawmakers be capable of setting aside their biases and protecting the rights of the ever vulnerable hot girls? Only time will tell.
