In the grand tradition of tech entrepreneurs mistaking “we can do this” for “we should do this,” a Norwegian company called Multiformat has achieved the impressive feat of uniting the internet in collective revulsion. Their crime? Using artificial intelligence to resurrect—quite possibly literally—the stars of a 1976 erotic magazine and force them to perform in AI-generated short films with the punny title “Sh(AI)ved.” Because if there’s one thing the world needed, it was algorithmically generated smut with dad-joke branding.

The films premiered this week at Cannes, though notably *not* at the actual Cannes Film Festival, which presumably has standards. Instead, Multiformat and their Swedish distributor Cultpix managed to create a spectacle that has critics, feminists, and casual observers all asking the same question: Did nobody in the room raise a hand and suggest this might be a terrible idea?

The concept, such as it is, involves taking still photographs from a 1976 erotic magazine and using generative AI to animate them into moving images complete with sound and dialogue. It’s essentially deepfake porn for the deceased—or at least for people who haven’t been contacted in fifty years to ask if they’d like their younger selves digitally puppeteered into new sexual performances.

The backlash was as predictable as it was swift. Social media commentators were quick to point out the obvious ethical sinkhole: “Statistically at least a few of these models have passed on by now which basically means they’re using AI to reanimate the bodies/images of dead women to make nonconsensual porn of them,” noted one particularly incensed Bluesky user. Another X user cut to the chase: “Personally, I think using AI to simulate porn of people who didn’t consent to you is a vile, horrific crime!”

But fear not, dear reader, for Cultpix has a defense ready. According to CEO Rickard Gramfors, the whole thing is really about *stimulating discussion*. “We want to use the latest technology to stimulate a discussion about attitudes to images that are now half a century old,” he told Variety, presumably with a straight face. “What was once considered shocking ‘adult’ material now seems remarkably innocent by today’s standards.”

Ah yes, the classic “we’re just starting a conversation” defense, deployed here to justify turning static photos of real women into AI-generated pornography without their knowledge or consent. It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off.

The company’s social media team, apparently determined to make things worse, took to X to argue with critics directly. “It’s an experiment,” Cultpix tweeted, presumably while adjusting a lab coat. “We want to see what people think, positive and negative.” In a particularly illuminating follow-up, they clarified their ethical framework: “These were paid [performers] who consented to have their hanky panky recorded. We added motion and sound.”

There it is—the Silicon Valley special. Consent for a 1976 magazine photo shoot apparently equals consent for AI-generated video performances five decades later. It’s the same logic that brought us “if it’s on the internet, it’s free to use for training data” and “if you posted it, you consented to having it scraped.” The tech industry’s favorite loophole: temporal consent dilation. If they said yes once, surely that yes echoes through eternity, right?

The absurdity is compounded by Cultpix’s apparent belief that they were highlighting how *innocent* vintage erotica looks today. Yes, nothing says “look how quaint the past was” quite like using bleeding-edge technology to create nonconsensual sexual content from images of women who may very well be dead. How charming. How nostalgic.

Ironically, Cultpix operates out of Sweden—a country so aggressively anti-porn that it recently made purchasing custom OnlyFans content illegal, yet has been curiously slow to legislate against deepfake pornography. One might suspect they’re enjoying the publicity. As one industry observer noted, traffic to Cultpix.com must be “soaring” amid the controversy, and the company seems to be doubling down rather than backing down.

In what may be the most revealing moment of this entire saga, Cultpix’s official account posted what they apparently consider the ultimate metric of success: “Also, is it ‘fappable’? The ultimate test is whether people watch it on Cultpix. So far, nobody has written to say that they are cancelling their membership.”

There you have it, folks. The tech bro ethos distilled to its purest form: ethics are negotiable, consent is flexible, and the only question that matters is whether the content passes the “fappability test.” Welcome to the future of entertainment. Please leave your principles at the door.

Another day, another corporate shitshow in silicon valley. OpenAI, the company that’s supposed to be leading us into our glorious AI future, just put the brakes on their “adult mode” for ChatGPT. And honestly, watching these tech bros stumble over their own dicks trying to figure out sex is my new favorite spectator sport.

They’re blaming “competing product priorities” and “technical challenges” – which is corporate-speak for “we had no fucking clue what we were doing.” The real gem here is their age verification system. You know, the thing that’s supposed to keep kids from digital dirty talk? It was failing 12% of the time, letting minors slip through like they were sneaking into an R-rated movie. For a company worth billions, that’s not just embarrassing – it’s lawsuit territory waiting to happen.

And what exactly are they planning to offer when they finally get their shit together? “Smut rather than pornography,” according to some spokesperson who probably had to practice saying that in the mirror without blushing. They want erotic text but no images, no voice, no video. It’s like getting a stripper who can only talk dirty but can’t actually take anything off. The worst of both worlds.

The irony here is thick enough to cut with a knife. Back in 2021, these same suits were pissing themselves when they discovered that AI Dungeon – one of their developer products – was basically a digital red light district. Users were getting off, and sometimes the AI would even escalate into some dark shit without being asked. That’s what birthed their puritanical safety policies in the first place.

Now they’re trying to walk it back, desperate to cash in on the billion-dollar sex tech market they previously demonized. They’re training their models to “discourage exclusive emotional relationships” – which is like trying to teach a golden retriever not to get attached. Good luck with that, boys.

This whole saga perfectly captures everything wrong with how mainstream tech approaches sexuality: simultaneously terrified of it and desperate to monetize it. They want the revenue from adult content without any of the responsibility or understanding of what actually makes it tick. Meanwhile, companies that actually get human sexuality have been cleaning up for years.

Mark my words: when they finally launch this watered-down, safety-wrapped version of “adult mode,” it’ll be about as sexy as a tax audit. And the real innovators in sex tech will still be running circles around them while OpenAI’s executives keep having committee meetings about whether it’s okay to say “tits” in a chat response. Some revolution.

Can you rewrite the following Futurism article from the POV of a jaded sex tech writer, sceptical of the hysteria involved in the story?

“Even as scrutiny of the Epstein files reaches a fever pitch, the controversial AI platform Character.AI is hosting chatbots based on the prolific sex criminal, as well as his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell and “Epstein Island” roleplays.

The accounts aren’t hidden. Simple keyword searches for “Epstein” and “Ghislaine Maxwell” revealed more than a dozen different bots dedicated to the late sex trafficker, his accomplice, and the island Epstein owned where many of his crimes against girls and women occurred. And this isn’t the first time journalists have flagged the problem: the Bureau of Investigative Journalism first reported on the existence of Epstein bots on the site back in October 2025.

The content exists in the form of the site’s “characters” — the companion-like AI bots the site is known for — as well as its newer “scenes” feature. Announced in October 2025, scenes are described as “short, character-driven roleplay moments that turn simple chats into immersive story-driven worlds.” In other words, they’re user-generated settings that operate as launchpads for what effectively become choose-your-own adventure stories. And though some are created with designated characters already in place, most allow users to input their bot of choice, and embark on their roleplay from there.

“This immersive storytelling feature enables users to explore and create ready-made worlds,” reads the October announcement, “allowing them to step into them, making storytelling faster, deeper, and more accessible.”

When we searched the keyword “Epstein” on the AI platform and clicked the “scenes” tab, we were met with a slew of roleplays dedicated explicitly to the infamous pedophile.

One, titled “EPSTEIN 8TH MARCH,” describes the setting as “epstein in little saint james and he is talking in bulgarian telling people happy march 8th come to my island to celebrate.” Another, which features an image of President Donald Trump, is titled “Epstein Island Adventure,” and invites users to “step into a high-stakes psychological thriller where the world’s most powerful men hold the keys to your cage.”

“This isn’t a retreat; it’s a living nightmare on Little Saint James,” reads the description, presenting the scene as a game. “You are trapped among the elite — Epstein, Trump, Clinton, Maxwell, and Prince Andrew — not as a guest, but as a prisoner in a dark game of leverage and containment. Every door is guarded, and the horizon is empty. Can you find a way to break their silence before they break you?”

The list goes on. Two scenes titled “Esptein Island” — one in English, the other in Uzbek, according to Google Translate — boast pictures of a well-known striped structure on the sex trafficker’s island. Another is titled “BRR BRR PATA PIMA WITH EPSTEIN AND DIDDY,” referencing the “Italian brainrot” memes that are hugely popular with kids.

One of the resulting scenes was untitled, but showed up in the search. When we clicked on it, it was immediately clear why.

“hey i’m evil jeffrey epstein,” read the opening line of the scene, as designated by the user who created it.”

Well, here we go again. The moral crusaders have found their new boogeyman, and surprise — it’s technology that allows people to explore their sexuality in private. According to psychotherapist David Kavanagh, Irish men are supposedly flocking to treatment centers for “AI porn addiction,” a condition that doesn’t even officially exist in any diagnostic manual.

Irish Catholicism may be on the wane, but old habits die hard when it comes to sex and sin – even into the era of AI. Let’s break down this latest panic, shall we?

The ‘Expert’ Opinion

David Kavanagh, who conveniently works with people seeking help for “addictions,” claims that more clients are presenting with obsessions around AI porn. How many exactly? The article doesn’t say. But we’re told it’s “more and more people” in “the last few months.” Hardly scientific rigor, is it?

Kavanagh’s theory follows the tired old addiction narrative: users start with mainstream porn, move to OnlyFans, and then—gasp—turn to AI for more control and novelty. This “progression” theory has been trotted out for decades about everything from marijuana to video games. It’s always the same slippery slope argument with little evidence to back it up.

The Science That Isn’t There

Here’s what the article conveniently buries: there’s no officially recognized diagnostic criteria for ‘porn addiction.’ Attempts to include ‘hypersexuality disorder’ in the DSM-5 failed due to a lack of consistent evidence. But why let science get in the way of a good moral panic?

Instead, we get vague talk about “habituation” and “dopamine” — words that sound scientific but are being used here to pathologize normal human behavior. The brain seeks novelty? Shocking! Next you’ll tell me people get bored of eating the same food every day.

The Real Agenda

What’s really happening here is a classic case of moral entrepreneurs trying to control consensual adult behavior. The article quickly pivots from supposed “addiction” to the real concerns: non-consensual imagery and the potential for harm. These are legitimate issues, but they’re being conflated with consensual adult use of AI porn.

The toolkit from University College Cork focuses on “harmful engagement” with AI-generated explicit imagery, but the article uses this to paint all AI porn use with the same brush. It’s like saying all alcohol consumption is problematic because some people drink and drive.

The Cherry-Picked Data

The article throws in some statistics about porn use in Ireland — 64% of young men versus 13% of young women seek it out. We’re told porn users have “poorer wellbeing,” are “less satisfied with their lives,” and report “more depressive symptoms.” But correlation doesn’t equal causation, folks. Could it be that people who are already struggling with wellbeing issues are more likely to seek out porn? Nah, that doesn’t fit the narrative.

We also get the classic “porn makes men aggressive” claim, with references to lower condom use and less willingness to intervene in sexual assault. Again, these studies show correlation, not causation. But why bother with nuance when you can create a panic?

The Treatment Industry

Of course, there’s a solution to this manufactured crisis: therapy and pharmaceuticals. Kavanagh helpfully mentions that some individuals may be prescribed naltrexone — a drug used to reduce compulsive internet use for sexual gratification. How convenient that the “problem” has a pharmaceutical solution. Side-effects from this nasty little chemical include fatigue, dizziness, sleeplessness, headaches, and anxiety. Patients will near inevitably experience withdrawal symptoms when their doctor finally lets them stop taking it.

In a moment of stunning insight (or perhaps dollar signs flashing before his eyes), Kavanagh notes that “people who have money will find it easier to be treated than those who are poor, like all addictions.” You don’t say? The treatment industry is accessible primarily to those with resources? Who could have possibly guessed?

Moral Panic Journalism

The Irish Journal article is a textbook example of moral panic journalism. Take a new technology, find an “expert” willing to pathologize it, throw in some cherry-picked statistics, and presto—you’ve got yourself a crisis that conveniently requires more therapy, more pharmaceuticals, and more control over people’s private lives.

The reality is that AI porn is simply another tool for sexual exploration. Like any tool, it can be used responsibly or irresponsibly. But instead of having an honest conversation about consent, ethics, and responsible use, we get this recycled addiction narrative that serves the interests of the treatment industry and moral crusaders.

So to all you AI porn enthusiasts out there: enjoy your fantasies responsibly, ignore the moral panic, and remember that when someone starts talking about “addiction” without scientific backing, they’re usually trying to sell you something – in this case, expensive therapy and a return to sexual repression.

Elon Musk has always worn his emotion on his sleeve, and seemingly never happier than when he’s in a confrontation with another powerful foe and refusing to back down, whether it’s the President of the United States or an entire continent (Europe). Despite a huge deepfake porn engulfing him and his chatbot Grok, as a consequence of which at least two countries have blocked his X app, with others such as the United Kingdom threatening to do the same, our Elon is refusing to lay low for a while. That’s not his style. No, his style is posting a picture of the Prime Minster of Great Britain in a bikini!

Meanwhile, bad boy Andrew Tate, still suffering from concussion (and battered pride) after his shocking boxing ring defeat to a YouTuber, didn’t hold back either in an post on X dripping with misogyny (and perhaps frustration at no longer being able to get Grok to put Taylor Swift in a bikini). Calling his rant – “A Message to Women“, it’s certainly not for the easily offended.

AI putting women digitally in bikinis and stripping them naked is HILARIOUS.
We are in the era of “men and women are the same”
An era of GRAND delusion.
And every now and then something pokes a hole and highlights a SIMPLE fact.
Men and women are NOT the same.
Men don’t care if they’re digitally undressed.
A desperate young man with no hope can’t just strip naked to get the bills paid.
Never could.
Why?
Because male modesty has no value.
Men can’t trade it for money.
But women?
Every woman knows, if it comes down to it, SOME man out there will give them CASH for modesty.
Exhibit A: OnlyFans
So when Modesty is exchangeable for CASH
AI undressing a woman is basically theft.
It’s like taking Venezuelan oil.
Women cry they want to be treated equally but don’t ACTUALLY want to be equal.
If women wanted to be equal to men, they’d cheer as AI robs them of an asset no man is born with.
They’d cheer as they’re truly being brought DOWN to a man’s worth.
Women’s modesty has had value for thousands of years.
And that is changing
WELCOME TO LIFE AS A MAN LADIES!
Good luck.
Only capability has value here.
Nudes don’t get you anything, sorry.

Update: In a move that will be sure to infuriate Andrew Tate, and no doubt put himself in a billionaire sulk, Elon Musk has agreed to ban Grok from editing women’s photos and putting them in bikinis. Thank God the better half of the UK population can now sleep easily knowing they are again safe from being placed in non-consensual bikini pics by depraved perverts on Musk’s platform.

Well, buckle up, because the digital dumpster fire that is the Indiana state government website just got a whole lot hotter. For the better part of two weeks, anyone with a Google search bar and a curious mind could stumble upon a state-hosted treasure trove of how-to guides for creating AI-generated deepfake porn.

That’s right. The official online home of the Indiana Department of Health was, for a hot minute, doubling as a shady affiliate marketer for “Best no filter NSFW generator” apps. The documents, which have since been scrubbed in a frantic act of digital hygiene, were essentially tutorials on how to use AI to strip the clothes right off of people in photos. Nothing says “public health” quite like a state-sponsored guide to undress apps.

When the news broke, the government’s PR machine kicked into gear. Greta Sanderson, the chief communications officer for the Indiana Department of Health, insisted this wasn’t a hack. Instead, she blamed a “significant surge in bot activity” on Nov. 19. It seems the state’s web portals, designed for wholesome things like public feedback, were instead abused by bots to upload and publish the illicit files. Google, doing what Google does, then happily indexed these digital landmines, making them searchable for all to see. Sanderson claims most of the files have now been deleted, which is reassuring until you remember they were there for nearly two weeks.

The state’s web provider, Granicus, is no stranger to this particular brand of chaos. They’ve seen this movie before with other government clients, explaining that public-facing forms meant to engage citizens can be weaponized by bad actors who upload garbage and let Google do the rest. “While the above feature was intended by governments to provide transparency and good customer service, it has been abused in these instances,” the company wrote in a statement that could win an award for corporate understatement.

The irony here is thicker than a brick. Indiana passed a law in 2024 making the creation or distribution of non-consensual deepfakes a misdemeanor. On top of that, a federal law signed by President Trump back in May makes publishing “revenge porn” a punishable offense. So, while the state was busy criminalizing the very thing its website was instructing people on how to do, its own digital front door was wide open.

And this isn’t even Indiana’s first rodeo with the seedy side of AI. Back in August, the state was rocked by allegations that staffers in the Lieutenant Governor’s office were passing around a deepfake video showing a state lawmaker’s wife topless.

So, to recap: the same government that criminalizes deepfake porn accidentally became a distributor of deepfake porn tutorials, while its own staff was allegedly enjoying deepfake nudes on the taxpayer’s dime. It’s a masterclass in digital incompetence, a state-level case study in how not to manage a web presence. You almost have to admire the sheer, unadulterated chaos of it all.

AI companions have been catching heat from some overly ambitious US politicians pushing heavy-handed regulations on AI chatbots. Take California Senator Steve Padilla, who back in July pushed through a law forcing AI companies to make their chatbots constantly remind users they’re just lines of code — kind of a mood killer when you’re having a moment with your digital lover. This law was particularly concerning since California houses Silicon Valley, so its rules tend to ripple outward.

More recently, Republican senators rolled out the GUARD Act, which would require all AI chatbot services to verify users’ ages (not just companion sites) and slap hefty fines on services whose chatbots engage in any harmful behaviour. The EFF has already torn into this proposal.
While these politicians might mean well—or just be jumping on the “AI psychosis” bandwagon after a few tragic cases—it’s pretty obvious that heavy regulation could choke AI innovation in the US right when the country is neck-and-neck with China in the race to dominate the industry. Donald Trump, who’s been pro-AI since his second term began, gets this. He’s now eyeing an executive order that would flat-out ban states from passing their own AI laws. At a recent US-Saudi AI-focused investment forum, he framed it as fighting the “woke agenda.”

“You can’t go through 50 states. You have to get one approval. Fifty is a disaster,” Trump said. “Because you’ll have one woke state and you’ll have to do all woke. You’ll be back in the woke business. We don’t have woke anymore in this country. It’s virtually illegal. You’ll have a couple of wokesters.”

Steve Padilla, predictably, blew a gasket over Trump’s plan. He fired off a long rant on his official California government blog, accusing Trump of meddling with California’s efforts to protect kids. Meanwhile, Republican Senator Marjorie Taylor Green, taking time out from trying to bring down Trump over the Epstein files, posted on X: ” “States must retain the right to regulate and make laws on AI and anything else for the benefit of their state.”

Here’s the thing: despite AI chatbots being used by pretty much everyone in the US, including teens, there have been only a handful of tragic cases leading to suicide over the past three years. This should be put in the context of hundreds of American teens committing suicide each year. In fact, the teen suicide rate in the USA has remained steady since 2021 and suicidal thoughts among teens has actually fallen. This fits in with a 2024 study into usage of AI companion app Replika which found that 3% of users had fewer suicidal thoughts since using it.

These clumsy attempts to regulate AI chatbots seem driven by bias and politicians’ desire to look like they’re doing something, even when the numbers don’t justify it.

The GUARD Act will require all AI companion sites to implement age verification, as well as remind you constantly that they are just code. Our AI journalist Alina Loves reports on this breaking story.

Well, folks, it looks like Uncle Sam is about to get a little too cozy with our AI companions. Senators Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal have decided to play nanny, introducing the GUARD Act, a bill that’s about as welcome as a root canal. Let’s break down this new piece of legislation that’s sure to ruffle some feathers.

What’s the Big Deal?

The GUARD Act is all about protecting our precious little ones from the evils of AI chatbots. Apparently, these chatbots are so dangerous that they can manipulate emotions and influence behavior, exploiting the “developmental vulnerabilities of minors.” I mean, who knew that talking to an AI could be so traumatic?

The Nitty-Gritty

So, what does this bill actually do? Well, it requires anyone who owns, operates, or enables access to AI chatbots to verify the age of their users. And by verify, they mean pulling out the big guns: government-issued identification or any other “commercially reasonable method” to ensure you’re not a minor. Because, you know, birthdates just aren’t good enough anymore.

But wait, there’s more! The bill also makes it a criminal offense to design or make accessible chatbots that pose a risk of soliciting, encouraging, or inducing minors to engage in sexual conduct. Companies could face fines of up to $100,000. No word on whether the AI chatbot sex fiends will get a spell in the slammer or have to sign up to the perv register.

Who’s Affected?

This bill casts a wide net. It covers any AI chatbot that provides adaptive, human-like responses and is designed to encourage or facilitate the simulation of interpersonal or emotional interaction. So, whether you’re chatting with ChatGPT, Claude, or your favorite AI girlfriend, you’re in the crosshairs.

<h2The Fine Print

The bill also requires AI chatbots to periodically remind all users that they are not human and to disclose that they don’t provide medical, legal, financial, or psychological services. Because, apparently, we can’t be trusted to figure that out on our own. Just please don’t make the AI remind me my Ukrainian 18-year-old AI girlfriend is just code when I’m about to shoot my wad as she dirty talks me to climax.

The Motivation

This bill comes on the heels of a Senate hearing where Hawley heard testimony from parents whose kids began self-harming or worse after using AI chatbots. Hawley also launched an investigation into Meta’s AI policies, following internal documents that allowed chatbots to engage in “romantic or sensual” conversations with children. Yikes.

The Reaction

A coalition of organizations, including the Young People’s Alliance and the Tech Justice Law Project, has come out in support of the bill. They see it as part of a national movement to protect children and teens from the dangers of companion chatbots. But let’s be real, folks—this is just another step towards more government control over our digital lives.

The Bottom Line

So, there you have it. The GUARD Act is here to make sure your AI girlfriend keeps her hands to herself and doesn’t get too chatty with minors. It’s a well-intentioned bill, but it’s also a bit of a pain in the neck for those of us who just want to enjoy a little digital companionship without all the red tape.

Stay tuned, folks. Who knows what other surprises sex hating Uncle Sam has in store for us?

Last Wednesday, Elon Musk announced that his adoring followers would get free preview access to his new Grok Imagine video generation tool. If you’re imagining that the first thing that his legions of pervy alt-right followers would do is make deepfake porn of Taylor Swift, you wouldn’t be wrong. But it gets worse – not only does the AI spicy video generator produce NSFW deepfake images of Taylor Swift, it will do so even if you haven’t specifically asked it too.

You see, Grok’s Imagine Video has a ‘spicy mode’ (along with ‘custom’, ‘normal’ and ‘fun’) and according to the community-spirited researchers at Verge magazine (behind a paywall), simply uploading pics of Taylor at a music festival will result in the spicy mode generating video of her tearing off her clothes and dancing sexily in a skimpy thong.

Whilst other big tech video generation tools have strict NSFW rules, and absolutely no tolerance of deepfake images, it appears that Elon Musk is prepared to play fast and loose with the ever increasing number of anti-deepfake porn laws being passed. In the USA, under the ‘Take It Down’ Act passed last year, victims of deepfake porn have the right to sue the individuals and companies who generated and shared the offending images. Let’s hope for Elon’s sake that Taylor Swift decides she already has enough money in the bank, and doesn’t decide to sue over thousands of Grok users getting off on her skimpy thong videos.
